The recollections of an Engineer stationed in 19th century Bantam residency. After a general historical description of Bantam Residency, from the earliest v.o.c. times onward, author ventilates his personal opinion on the Muslimi rebellion at Tjilegon 1888. Official colonial adminstrative reports conclude that this Jihad was instigated by religious 'fanatics' (Muslimi); author states however that unrest was caused by the appaling labour-conditions of the indigenous population on the large govenment-estates, also suffering under statuary-labour and the great famine at the time. The last chapter deals with the so-called Havelaar-perkara (Multatuli: Max Havelaar..). A very rare and much sought-after 'novel', based upon historical facts and own experiences. (ex-lib. copy, circular stamp on ti.-p., ex-lib. numbers on verso(blank) of ti.-p.).
